William and Tammie Scott own and operate Scotts’ Farm Store in Old Saybrook, CT. Will is the 5th generation of his family to be involved in the farming industry. He and Tammie have three daughters – Paige, Ella, and Madison – who are being raised with a love of nature and the land. They hope to see all of them continue in their passion.
Scotts' has been a staple of the Old Saybrook area since 1981. Will and Tammie formed Scott’s Farm Store LLC in 2011. The town of Old Saybrook and its residents have been welcoming and kind, and the Scott family thanks them for their continued support throughout the years!
The Scotts’ history in farming begins with Will’s great-great grandfather Michael Scott coming over from England in 1883. In 1894 Michael Scott planted his first apple trees, and in 1902, his sons Walter and Wilfred Scott began to farm in East Lyme. Walter and his wife Lillian, along with their sons Woodrow and Wainwright, established their orchards and farm stands on the Boston Post Road in East Lyme, CT.
Woodrow “Woody” Scott married Jane Meadnis and they had seven sons and two daughters: Enid, Walter, Woody, Naomi, Winston, Wilson, Wayne, Webster, and Whitney (Woody couldn’t keep their names straight either!). At one point, all seven sons were employed on the family farm. Eventually, their sons began to venture out on their own, and start their own families. All sons pursued farming and retail as their professions, as is evidenced by all the “Scotts” locations throughout Connecticut. All locations are individually owned and operated in Old Saybrook, Waterford, Essex, Deep River, Glastonbury (and a cousin in East Lyme!).
Woodrow Scott continued to work with his sons well into his golden years. He loved to drive and was always willing to transport produce, and he cultivated the strawberry fields until he was 91 years old. Woody was always generous with advice (gratis) until his death in 2009 at the ripe old age of 93. His legacy of hard work, love of land, honesty and determination lives on in his descendants. Presently, all five living sons as well as many grandchildren continue to be involved in farming in Connecticut and Pennsylvania.
